If you intend to use Audio CD or Video CD only (i.e. 1x operation
only)
you can try getting CD module like those from Philips (e.g Video
6001).
Cost only around US$25 (in some qty).

They are controlled via a 3-wire bit-banged serial protocol, and you
only need to add a suitable +8V,+5V power supply, DAC and output
buffer for a complete Audio CD system (controlled from your master
controller,of course).
You can even add a MPEG1 (Video CD) decoder for VideoCD playback.

Not exactly, what i want to be able to do is control several cd's, so
different music can be listened to in different rooms.  I've looked
into
cd jukeboxes and they are about $350-$400 (at cost) and they don't
really suit my purpose.
