It is supposed to break up hail forming in thunderstorms, in
our instance fruit growers use them to minimize hail damage
to the fruit crop.  I can't say whether it actually works or
not but growers who use them claim a marked reduction in hail
damage.  We just build the controllers for them. (good fun too!)

They report that when the hail cannons are firing the hail that falls
is "slushy" and does less damage.
