All 17Cxx parts have an 8x8 multiplier except the orginal 17C42. The 17C42A
is recommended as a replacement as it has the 8x8 multiplier and improved
code protection.

I know about the ambiguity you are talking about. I emailed the microchip
webmaster months ago re the wrong data on their web site.

So far the response from microchip has been what we all have come to expect
from them. They really must pay their staff peanuts...
