I have used thru-hole tri-color LEDs. They consisted of one red LED, one green LED, and two blue LEDs, all in one normal LED package with six (if I remember correctly) leads (the two blue leds act like one). I don't remember the manufacturer (but it might be CREE). I think that I got mine from Mouser electronics or Digikey about 2 years ago. The only problem with this LED combo is that the MAX brightness of the three colors is not the same and they are not arranged to throw all the light from each PN junction on the same spot. Consequently, the white sopt produced when all colors are on is very small, and is surrounded by various combinations of color.
