I am a new PIC programmer and have a question about a project I am about to start. The project is a LED banner comprised of 8 5x7 LED arrays (40 x 7 x-y array total) controlled via a PIC. Initially, I just plan on displaying fixed character patterns, but eventually would like to add special effects such as horizontal and vertical scrolling. What is the best architecture to use to control the LED array ? What is the best way to expand the PIC IO to handle this function ? My initial plan was to use shift registers and a pixel map in PIC memory, but this will involve many of components. Individual registers for each pixel seems like overkill. Any insight would be appreciated .
