There was a parallel method of programming the 14-bit parts but it is not specified anymore. (It would be no good for the 8-pin parts and Quad packs etc.) It is possible though that the silicon Die still supports it however it is a risky business for programmer OEMs to not change over to the ISP method indeed. Sounds like some lobbying is required. Yes. Without doubt, it is straight forward 5-wire job. Just connect the surface mount programming pins to the same on the 40-pin zif.
