For "high power" application (TO-220) I would recommend the LM2940T-5.0.
This regulator was designed for automotive applications and reverse
polarity protection is built-in! For "low power" application use the
LM2936Z-5, same features + low drop-out in TO-92 case. Be careful with the
2940, it is particular about the series resistance of the cap you use to
prevent oscillations.
