The hex file is definitely checked out. I've even changed the hex file tonon-read-only with Norton
Commander. That also failed. Then I deleted
it altogether (no hex files in the directory) with the same results.

What is the difference between the "make", "build", and "compile single
file" in MPLAB? Wouldn't the "compile single file" also require the hex
file to be deleteable?
