If you just have charged your battery, the voltage will be above 1.2V. I
have seen as much as 1.4V.

When the voltage drops below 1 V, the battery is empty, so if you use 4
batteries, the voltage will vary between 4V and slightly above 5V.

How low discharge rate? Remember that the self discharge rate of NiCd and
NiMH are high, 30-50% per month.
