The 5X chips require a lot more programmer hardware since the programmer needs to apply 12 bits of data in parallel as well as control both the MCLR and RTCC pins with high voltage. As a result the programmer is more complicated. I think the Needham's programmers can do them with adapters, or of course the PICSTART or PICSTART Plus, but these aren't exactly cheap. Consider converting to a low-end 14-bit PIC such as a 16C556 or 16C61. The cost is nearly the same or maybe even less.
