If you mean serial to the pic but controled from a parallel port then
check microchip's AN589.

I have my own quickbasic and executables available if you do this. I
used to run from DOS but now run from win3.11 when picstart+ gives me
hassles(ie pic16c74). if you have a fast PC you can reduce the program
time for each location which gives faster erase than the official pgm
algorithm.

My program includes a cursor selection of *.hex files

a spare printer port comes in handy for low budget logic analyser tasks.
