This topic comes up quite frequently, and the result is always the same.
There's a lot of arguing and nothing happens, because many of us like it
the way it is.  The fact that it is a mailing list does not prevent you
from using threads; you just need an appropriate email program.

Some time back I created another mailing list for the express purpose of
discussing whether PICLIST should be changed into a newsgroup.  To
subscribe, send a message with "subscribe" in the body to
        piclist-replacement-newsgroup-list-request@brouhaha.com

To send a message to people on that list, send it to
        piclist-replacement-newsgroup-list@brouhaha.com
