There is >no (reliable) way to re-use them. I am no expert on radioactive materials, but I don't think that cobalt emits X-rays in the same frequency range as, say, an x-ray machine. I think they are MUCH harder (gamma rays). Maybe softer x-rays would be more likely to cause erasure without crystal damage?
