There has been quite a discussion on ceramic resonators over the past year. My experience is that those from muRata with built in capacitors work well with a 16c74a operating at 16 MHz. The similar units from Integrity Technology and ECS do not work reliably with this chip at this frequency. I had extensive conversations with all three companies and with Microchip. Microchip does not characterise the oscillator circuit, so we are on our own to come up with a working resonator (though they do list some muRata parts with external capacitors in their databook). Integrity and ECS say their parts work with a CMOS inverter, so they are fine. There appears to be no attempt by either of these companies to make the devices work with the Microchip parts. When I spoke with muRata, they had received chips from Microchip and were running tests on their resonators. I did not wait for the test results, but went with the standard muRata 16 MHz device with built in capacitors. We'e now shipped at least 1,000 units with no problems.
