Mark, I don't recall the exact part # off the top of my head, but it's a small, 16 pin, 8 bit microcontroller with the formant speech processing hardware built in. I believe it's a member of the TSP50C0x/1x family. It's an LPC system, and the idea was to pull large volumes of speech out of an external ROM for the stand alone mode. Barney also "speaks" with streaming voice data from it's RF link (5 kbs). I'm partial to this family of chips when a design requires speech, due to the fact that they are also g.p. processors that can be used to control other I/O requirements in your designs.
