I also couldn't see an announcement re the competition but
there was a press release about several new PICs, the first
due out in May 98 (watch this space?).
The 16C505 is a 1K OTP in a 14 pin pkg with up to 12 I/O
(big brother to 12C508?).
Cost is $US0.50 in "quantity".
