Oddly enough they preferred the assembler. We have been using both with the Dontronics DT001 programmer and the Simstick boards with 16C84's, together with Nigel Goodwin's downloader. We have designed PIC controllers ranging from simple light chasers to traffic light intersections. Both programming techniques were fairly smooth to implement, once the relevant literature was decoded! The book Easy PIC'n by David Benson is a good place to start or Myke Predko's Programming and Customizing the PIC Microcontroller.
