There is a "set break" bit which, when set, disables the normal transmitter logic and forces the TX line "high" (positive RS-232 voltage). I don't have the book here but I think it's in the same register that controls the number of bits per character, parity, etc. Maybe 3FB, bit 7 but this is strictly a guess.
