I've build one of the ultra-simple PC serial port 16c84 programmers (a few resistors & zener's and a 5V supply), and (with my 486 PC, com84 and pip02) it worked fine. I've designed my own (based on a 16c84) and that also works fine. Programming a 16c84/16f84 is quite easy.
