No nasty work-arounds. You can get by cheaper, but you'll soon see that you have to buy this module or that compiler extra to do your work - a real pain. I've gone through 4 compilers (NITPIC,MPLAB-C,CCS,MPC - all legal copies) before settling on MPC. There are loads of libraries all over to work from as well.
