For an easy-to-talk-to Ethernet controller, you might check out the SMC 91C94; it's an ISA-bus device, has pretty much everything you'd need, and seems fairly easy to talk to. As mentioned earlier, it handles all the Ethernet stuff on its own, and only needs simple I/O cycles to move data in and out. You gotta make your own packets, but it'll ship 'em out for you.
