It is relatively straightforward to make my own software work with the
AN589 hardware.  In fact, PICLIST contributor Mal Goris told me he had
done just that.  He may be persuaded to supply his source - are you
listening Mal?

Hiroaki Kobayashi has taken the C fragment presented in Application
Note 589 and filled it out into a full program.  You can find the
source here:

I've only had a quick look at this but one quirk is that it only
loads the old INHX16 style hex files.  Anyway, the source is there
so you can fix that or not as you please.
