Some time ago, a major carrier (Delta, TWA, ?) announced a similar prohibition. I recall the rationale was that there was a critical frequency in the laser diode driver circuit. Several months/years ago, IEEE Spectrum ran an article on Personal Electronic Devices in the airborne environment and gave insight into the deliberations of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics Special Committee which was looking into the subject and its associated hazards.
