Yes.  The hardware is just as suitable for either PIC.  I think Steve

AN589-like hardware can be used with most serial mode programmable
PICs (with appropriate software of course).  If ISP capability is not
required then Octavio Nogueira's stuff may fit the bill:

The 16C54 and the like cannot be programmed in serial mode.  If you
