How does this book compare to Pic'n Up The Pace?  Similar in caliber (even
 though they maybe discuss different subject matter)?

There's lots more useful stuff than the serial device.  There's IR, CRC,
random numbers, and more.

In other words, working examples (with disk) of everything the newbies on
this list ask for.
