I dismantled a SONY remote that used 1 battery technology and the circuit is simple a transistor is used to energise a coil and the led is the catch diode (it comes on as the transistor goes off) try it some time with a relay use a LED to catch the back emf it flashes small inductors are cheep and cost less than charge pump but the still need the resiviour cap close to them simple idea but effictive ..
