What I understood they were saying is to sense feedback from 12V rail instead of 5V rail. With the correct resistor(s) this should work as you won't be changing any voltages, just deriving feedback from the more used rail. Yes, it would be true that you couldn't draw any more current from the 12V rail than originally designed for.
