Do an Altavista search on LIRC. (linux infra red controller or similar) Info on how to hook the sharp/RS module up to the serial port and read it manually on the control signal bits. I have a simple Quickbasic program that scrolls 1s and 0s up the screen so you can see what's hitting it in realtime..
