The mask revision number after the date is though a "minor" silicon revision, mainly intended as updates and error fixes, whereas the 'A' version comprises of major changes as for e.g silicon shrink or configuration changes. It is recommended (and Microchip correct me if I am wrong) to re-compile the code for the new devices and there might be a need to re-qualify the design for critical applications.
