[snip] One node of the system will be a PIC (probably a 16F84, because it'll need to store the 36-byte packets of our protocol) which interfaces to the serial port of a PC. We both have machines running continuously, (me a NetWare server and Brian a Linux box), and it isn't too much hassle to write some minor software that collects data and runs several timed events (like lighting to keep the burglars at bay).
