        i'd recommend the PIC17C756.  it may be overkill, but capacity you don't
use is a lot less frustrating than capacity you need but don't have.  some
specs:

-32K program memory
-1K or so data memory
-64Kx16 external memory space (requires 2 74LS373's or equivalent to break
out address lines)
-2 UART's
-50 I/O's (shared w/serial port, external mem interface etc.)
-10 bit 12 channel A/D converter
-33 MHz max speed (15 ma typ current draw at this speed)

        the EPROM version comes in a 68 pin LCC.  i've used it with good success
