You may want to look at the Siemens SFH551 and SFH756 plastic fiber optic
receiver and transmitter packages.  They are very reasonably priced and we
have had good results using them for F.O. links at 1.25 Mbps out of the
16C74s UART.

However if your run is longer than about 100 meters, then you will have to
use glass fiber.  HP has some new parts that might be useful for glass fiber.
