Yes, I know its plugged in and conected to the paralel port, or is it
the SCSI external bus, or maybe an external conector for a QIC tape
streamer, or...

I'm not kidding, I've been there many times, these kind of mistakes is
very common when you have a loaded PC, also try to check for broken
wires on your conector cable or any lose pins in the DB25M connector,
these tend to rectract when you insert it on the port of the PC.
This normally covert for 90% of such problems.
