The other two pins are (probably) for backlight.  (If there is only
one 44780 part.  If there are two, then you probably have a 4x40 and
the extra two pins are for E2 and something else I can't remember.)

P.S.  I use a truly LCD that has 16 pins, but only the first fourteen
are used on the model without backlight.
