Each PIC port pin can source 20mA and sink 25mA, so you can see from this that using our calculated drive current of 160mA per segment is going to be optimistic at best. Actually, these specs are the "maximum safe" values, which you must guarantee with your component selections. The PIC will do much more than this current, but it causes failures due to metal migration in the silicon - can't be protected by heat-sinking, etc. By the way, this is an "instantaneous" spec, not an average.
