One of the pins is not connected and the other one had a larger track going
from it, so I guessed that it might be a backlight and applied +5 to it and
lo and behold the display illuminated.

The other 2 pins are somtimes for an led backlight check and see if they
goto
the 2 pads at the end of the glass !
