    The Timex/Sinclair machines did it with the CPU, but I recommend getting a
    cheap VGA chip.  C&T has VGA/LCD combo chips that are very suitable.

Hmm.  Unless space is a serious concern, I'd recomend a cheap vga *CARD*.
All you have to do is figure out how to simulate a piece of ISA bus.
