1)  I have the PICSTART-16C programmer (firmware V1.30)
but unfortunately it is not recognised by MPLAB (v3.22.02)
when I go to the setup options.

Does anyone know how to get it to be recognised and then how
to program a PIC16C77?

2)  I am changing from PIC 74 to 77 due to space requirements.  Is
there anything that I ought to look out for?
