Hitichi says logic power supply (Vdd - Vss) of 4.75 to 5.25V operating, 6.5V absolute maximum. I've never tried away from 5. You may need to apply negative voltage to the Vo pin to get enough display contrast with low Vdd (this is determined by the LCD panel itself, which sees Vdd-Vo as its peak operating voltage).
