I am longtime user of Protel Schematic and PCB software, probaly first in Europe ( 1987). I have desihned PCBs over 30 years.
-Easytrax is Protel's low end PCB product, not changed in 10 last years. Many hobby-designers still use it for schematic and pcb-work. They have developed symbols for schematic work. Easytrax have only semi-automatic router. It is freeaware. If there is interest I can put it on my homepage ( http:/www.sci.fi/~pri) tomorrow. I have it in work.
-Autotrax loads netlist ( parts and connections), places parts automatically to board and autoroutes connections. Works very well, but a new studens do not think that DOS-software is any good. It is sold in different name in USA. About USD 400 ( SCH +PCB)
--Traxstar is advanced autoroute for Autotrax
. Dos Schematic is still fastest and most relaible way to generate schematic diagram. I have used it every days in last 10 years. I do use this altrough I have all new Protel versions for WIN3.11/WIN95/NT4.0 . I import schematic netlist to ADVANCED PCB version 2.8, which works much beter than a new ADV. PCB 3.0 ( it has lots of new features what I do not like). Anyway Protel is reliable, but now is coming too compicatied ( own speadsheet, own database own writing tools, complicated library operations, every time a slower operations or needs faster PC every time )
-Adv Schematic 3.2 is latest WIN95/NT-version, which I have never used to like. Slow, complicated library methods etc. Some of my customers like it, so this is only my opinion.
Have anybody taken time with different softwares and experienced users, how long it takes to design a new project with diffent kind of software . I can do with my software sometimes 2-3 new projects in a week ( design schematic, PCB , documents) and start software next week.
Anyway I think that a good designer can use any software, but everybody thinks his set is the best.
