Any chance it might be able to work of a serial port in the future
sometime - I expect to use a laptop when I go travelling in Malaysia
and as there is little other activity - I might take along a couple
of AVR's and burn the midnight oil in some remote hotel - sadly the
laptop I have in mind does not have an LPT port - only two serial ports ?

I suppose we just use the Atmel one - Kalle has the details, I think
you need to send a subscribe request to  atmel-request@pic.co.za
but I don't have the details as Kalle subscribed me directly :)
