Hi Frank, The idea for "microstepping" is to interpolate the current between two phases. If you put only current for one phase in each state you do a "big step". By giving, for instance a current i/3 for one coil and 2i/3 for the other you multiply by 3 the number of steps. Remember you must have a motor suitable for microstepping and use current-controlled drivers for doing this (not on-off switches). Its linearity is essential.
