When using LCD's I have found that better contrast is obtained if the digits
are clear on a black background. U can do this yourself. Take the
polerisation filter off the front of the display and turn it over remove the
old glue as this is now the front face and apply new glue to the glass and
reapply. Hey presto black background and clear digits as used in new hire
cars German car stereo's ect...
