I take it you have a PIC connected with just TX, RX and GND to your PC? If so, you set up Hyperterminal to use a Direct Connect to COMx. Set baud rate, parity, etc. to what your PIC program expects. Now here is the bit that stumped me for a couple of hours when I thought my circuit was faulty....switch OFF flow control, especially hardware flow control! The PC will not send to your PIC until it sees the hardware signals set correctly...but you dont have these connected so your PC will wait for a while then give up...your PIC wont see anything.
