Hey - if you ever make even $2 from the sale of any part of your work, then you qualify as a business and therefore can claim lots of deductions and you are entitled to a sales tax number. Even if you don't make a profit over the course of 7 years then you can still be earning income from your labours (no pun) and if you ever buy any parts/tools then these qualify as 'aids to manufacture'... If you are comfortable with engineering then you should be able to understand the tax act - hard to believe but its true, actually the tax act is more like bad programming by a team of people that never shared a social life - or understood the real world !
