Thanks to all who suggested Zatek - I've just ordered the 'Synario'
kit for $350 plus tax(*) - now I won't be able to sleep until it comes
in the post.  In the meantime I think I'll just ditch all that old
74 TTL that's lying around gathering dust...

(*) It seems unreasonable of the ATO to tax this at the 'hardware'
rate just because there's a cable and a few sample devices.  It's
mainly the software that you're paying for after all!
