My product must run at low voltages, so I need to use the "L" version of the 16F84. Based on the graph in figure 12-12 (page 88) in the 16LC84 data book (only ref available); to conserve power, but still have decent throughput, 3.58 Mhz in XT mode seemed a good compromize. Testing showed that all the prototypes functioned quite satisfactorily. However, yesterday I got the new 16LF84 databook, and was horrified that table 13.11 (page 86) says the max operating frequency is 2 Mhz in XT mode. It is unclear from the rest of the book whether the 2 Mhz is a hard limit for reliable XT oscillator operation, or if the limit is simply given under the constaints of the power consumption quoted in table 13.11. True to form, the 16LF84's electrical specs are very incomplete, and those which do appear are still labelled "Preliminary", so I am unable to read between the lines. So, here's the question: has anyone any experience, good or bad in running the "L" series products in XT mode above 2 Mhz? Many thanks, ...
