I read an article over the weekend in the May Computer Design
about USB: "To USB, or not to USB." It mentions several chips
that are available including the Lucent USS720 which a friend
of mine had a large part in developing. It's actually a tiny
ASIC rather than big one.

Devices implementing USB have to provide functionality
for a HUB, Plug&Play, isocronus transver and and and ...
IMHO the best way to use it is to get a Microcontroller
with USB implementet in HW, or design a big ASIC for it ...

Software seems also to be more complex then for RS232 ...
