I designed a clock which was published in a magazine here some time
ago. It was PIC based and fairly popular, but costly.

It used a 40 X 7 matrix of LED's,  (The expensive part), to display
the time.

However, instead of displaying dull old digital, it displayed the
time just as you would say it.

ie. 10:15  -  1/4 past 10
     5:45   -   1/4 to 6
     1:30   -    1/2 past 1
     7:00   -  7 o'clock,  Midnight, Noon etc.

This concept may be an interesting time keeper for the propellor
clock idea.
