Hi Scott: I'm doing something like this for a automotive application. I started with a 16C54/56, but found the switch point on the digital input would vary between production runs. I've since gone to a 16C62x part as I can get repeatability on the trigger point due to its built in analog comparator and setable VREF. You'll need a fixed R/C value also for a reference due to temperature variations. Also the 16C62x part has a built in brownout which was a real plus for me as compared to the 16C5x part.
